MVP for week of 5/1: The Face of America

Kevins Owens is the “New Face of America.” Gimmicks aside, Kevin Owens might be the new “Face that Runs the Place.”

Owens losing the United States Championship at Payback to Chris Jericho was shocking. But I don’t think many people were surprised that he quickly won it back two days later on Smackdown Live.

Owens brutally attacked Chris Jericho after the match, cementing himself as the show’s top heel.

It was a statement match. Owens took the title and then beat down Jericho to the point where he he’d to be helped off by the medical staff. (Of course, Jericho was leaving to tour with his band but it’s still real to me dammit.)

In his current feud with Styles, Owens and Smackdown Live are making the U.S. Championship feel more important than ever. And there is an argument to be made that it is now the most important belt on the show as we wait and see what happens with Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal.

I don’t think it would be a mistake to make Owens a double champ and build to Styles or Shinsuke Nakamura taking one of those belts off him.
