MVP for week of 4/17: Don’t hinder Jinder

Each week Gimmick Gorilla chooses an MVP in the wide world of sports entertainment.

This week’s choice may be controversial. Most of the buzz online after Monday and Tuesday was “Did you see Braun Strowman and Big Show break the ring?”

Strowman has been on a tear and no doubt is the star of Monday Night Raw right now and also appears to be the man (besides Reigns) going forward.

But come on. If three weeks ago you thought Jinder Mahal was going to be a number one contender for the WWE Championship, you need to be in Vegas right now going all in.

Hard Body Mahal has been building momentum since his short feud with Rusev. Just a few months ago he was mainly a jobber. Now that he is on the blue brand, the land of opportunity, Mahal has quickly climbed the ladder and is being setup for a program with Randy Orton.

Do I think Mahal is the right guy? Absolutely not. He will have a title shot before Sami Zayn, Rusev and many others who are very deserving. I’m also not sure his “I hate Americans” gimmick is the right direction for him when tensions are so high across the country. It’s “cheap heat” and it will only work for him until he is defeated. Then what?

But let’s give credit where credit it due. Mahal has put in the work. The man is ripped and possibly in the best physical shape out of any man or woman on the roster.

He is not the most talented wrestler, but he can compete. I think given the time and effort, he and Orton can put on a solid match.

Going forward with the Mahal-Orton feud will also give fans a reason to cheer for Orton. His victory over Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania 33 may have left a stale taste in the mouths of many.

Mahal winning Tuesday’s six-pack challenge, launching himself “outta nowhere” into a title match can also be a good sign for other wrestlers. It appears Smackdown is in the business of creating superstars, and that can only mean good things for everyone.

Jinder Mahal “shocked” the WWE Universe Tuesday. But he is deserving of the MVP spot when you consider what he has bene able to accomplish in such a short build.
